Starting with the Lake Huron and Southwestern Railway, chapters describe competition with Great Lakes passenger steamship lines through formation of the Detroit, Bay City and Alpena Railroad which relied on white pine freight shipments and, finally, the 96 year history of the D&M. Revised in 1992, the final chapter tells of the sale to the present day Lakes States Railroad. Illustrations on each page, rosters of locomotives.

ALONG THE RIVIERE AUXSABLES
(1987)
This mighty stream crossing Northeast Michigan was home to native Americans long before the coming of the white man. Commercial fishermen used the river mouth entering Lake Huron before Iosco County was formed, followed by lumbermen, sports fishermen and hunters. Early in the Twentieth Century, the river was dammed to provide hydroelectric power. Today, thousands annually enjoy its rugged beauty.

NO MORE HORSES
(1990)

OLD DAYS IN IOSCO
(1992)
Lumbermen controlled local politics and state government during the second half of the nineteenth century in Michigan and when the stands of white pine in Iosco were finally converted into stump lands, lumbermen exerted increased pressure on local politics. Some big-name lumbermen avoided paying property taxes by simply ignoring tax bills and challenged local government all the way to the supreme court. This volume speaks of changes before and after the turn of the century.

IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY
(1993)
This volume deals with the decade from 1933 to 1943, within the recollection of those who were at least in their teen years during World War II. The 25 chapters recall the depression years, how WPA helped in national economic recovery, the youngsters who jumped freight trains and rode the rails around the country, the Beall Nursery at East Tawas and the United States Forest Service's reclamation of cut-over lands, the Civilian Conservation Corps, entry of the U.S. into World War II, Iosco men who were killed during the war, prisoners of war, the Tawas boy who worked on the A-bomb and the civilian contribution to the war effort.

BACK THEN
(1994)
This volume deals with the 1920's, which were not particularly "roaring" in Iosco County, for a large segment of the younger population left for high paying jobs in the automotive industry. Those left behind began to take advantage of the area's rich natural resources, in particular, the inland lakes, Lake Huron and area streams, by expanding and building new facilities catering to the tourist and resort industry. Included in the 23 chapters is the story of Carl E. Schmidt, Lindberg's visit to Oscoda, prohibition, Chief Sodney and more.

GOLDEN AGE OF FARMING
(1995)
There was a time in the United States before the turn of the Twentieth Century, when there were more people living in small towns and on farms than there were in the large cities. Although farming had an early start in Iosco County, it was not until the 1890's -- the end of the major white pine production -- that this county enjoyed it's Golden Age of Farming. Today, much of the land that those early farmers cleared of pine stumps has reverted back to nature -- many dwellings and outbuildings have disappeared, along with the history of the owners. This volume tells part of the story.

EARLY TIMES IN IOSCO
(1996)
This volume tells of the "Gay Nineties" in Iosco County. For some, times were not so gay as lumbermen pulled up stakes, moved sawmills or burned them for the insurance, and men were out of work. Filling in the breech left by the demise of the white pine industry was a new railroad, farming and the beginning of the resort industry. This volume talks of the new Holland Hotel, business activities, schools and entertainment.

IN MY DAY: The Nifty 50's
(1997)
What a time it was -- those 1950's -- during an era never to be duplicated in local and national history. No one worried about kids on drugs, the nation was on a car buying spree, it was the era when television was in its infancy, and of course, the "Forgotten War" in Korea. The opening chapter deals with winter sports at Silver Valley, Chapel Lake Indian Ceremonials, trout fishing, Anderson Coach Co., schools and much more.

LET'S TWIST AGAIN -- The 60's
(1998)
Dominating this era in Iosco County was Wurtsmith Air Force Base and the opening chapter of 30 in this volume tells the importance of the B-52 Boeing Stratofortress and the men who flew them. The decade furnished many interesting stories ranging from riot control at Gordon Creek, to "stunted" perch of Saginaw Bay, the natural gas decision of 1963, "send a buck, save a doe," the first Perchville, wrestling over ambulance service and more.

SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY
(1999)
This word and picture journey takes the reader from 1900 to World War I, a momentous era in the nation's history, having witnessed the climb out of the 1890's abyss of business depression into the rambunctious new age of motoring. The 27 chapters range from local business, to the forgotten scourge of smallpox, the great flu epidemic, tales of Iosco bear hunts, how a Hale preacher's idea trapped German U-boats and incidents of World War I.
